There have been dreams of developing a children’s ministry program at Seventh Avenue for quite a while.
There have been many polls and conversations. When parents were asked what they hoped for in a children’s program, among the top responses included wanting their children to have positive associations with the church where they could build meaningful relationships. They wanted their children to be integrated in the life of the church. They wanted them to have joyful experiences in Sunday School where there would be room to explore and wonder. And when it came to fleshing out what that might look like, the parents’ response came with wisdom and gentleness: it was okay, and maybe even good, to start small and trust in keeping it simple.
So, we are starting small, keeping it simple, and trusting in the depth of the children and of the Seventh Avenue community. One of the strengths of Seventh Avenue is the worship service. We welcome children in worship and continue to create more opportunities for children to fully participate. On the first Sunday of each month, throughout the school year, we offer Children’s Sunday School leaning on Illustrated Children’s Ministry curriculum. It is curriculum that embraces simplicity and yet is able to tap into multiple intelligences, encourage play, and allow room for depth of exploration and wonder.
We have child care for our littlest ones (0-3). We look forward to discovering how this children’s ministry develops as well as to exploring what will unfold for our tweens and teens.
