Perspectives: Mendelssohn's Elijah, Old Testament Drama in Music

In this Perspectives series, led by John Prescott, we will delve into Felix Mendelssohn's ground breaking oratorio Elijah. The story of the prophet Elijah contains some of the most dramatic episodes in the Old Testament. In this work for chorus, soloists, and orchestra, Mendelssohn uses music to explore the complex, tender, and stormy relationship between God, Elijah and the people of Israel. Classes will start at 11:30AM after service on January 14th, 21st, and 28th.

John Prescott holds a PH.D. in musicology from U.C. Berkeley. He is also a spiritual director, having completed training at the Spiritual Direction Institute at the Mercy Center Burlingame. John is an Episcopalian and a Third Order Franciscan. He has led retreats on music and spirituality since 2002.
